California Master Bathroom Remodel

Master Bathroom Makeover

We had rented out our Northern California home of 20 years when we embarked on our journey to North Carolina for 3 years. My time in NC stirred up my underlying passion for home design which together with my husband we created, built and accomplished some fun and beautiful projects on our east coast home. Upon returning back to our home in coastal CA I knew it was in desperate need of updating and refresh and I knew exactly where we needed to start, our master bathroom! It was last renovated 15 years ago and I loved it for many of those but my taste had changed and I was ready to tackle our outdated slate, dark wood, bronze bathroom into a bright, light, airy space.

We took our existing bathroom down to the studs, keeping the existing footprint and just adjusting the layout slightly to open it up. We accomplished this by vaulting the ceiling and taking down the solid walls in the shower area, which we also redesigned slightly. We added a structural beam that I ended up loving so much in its raw form that I left it exposed and integrated into the design. We added a pocket door to the walk in closet and entrance to the bathroom that had only been open before. We kept the existing skylight which provides the most beautiful natural light. Adding glass panels in the shower rather than solid walls makes the space feel more open and light. Choosing neutral bright tiles for the floor and walls keeps it fresh and timeless.

I’m not going to sugar coat it, this was a huge undertaking with A LOT of hard, messy labor involved but it was definately worth it and I was also able to hone in on and work on perfecting my drywall and tiling skills, bonus! During this renovation we also deconstructed and reconstructed our walk in closet and master bedroom, I’ll post on that in a bit.

So without further ado, here is our before, during and after results…….

There it is, our refreshed master bathroom! This project took us approximately 3 months but we were mostly working on it over the weekends, there were Holidays in the mix and we were simultaneously working on our master bedroom and walk in closet during this renovation. The cost for this bathroom was approximately $10,000 with the lumber, tile, drywall, paint, fixtures, vanity, toilet, lighting, shower glass, doors and medicine cabinets which is far less than it would have cost had we paid someone else to do it! Thank you for stopping by, I hope this has brought you a little inspiration for your next project. Please let me know if you have any questions.
