This is a fun, inexpensive and easy makeover project for a dresser, bookcase or in this case an old nightstand. This was a nightstand of mine that has been around for about 18 years, I passed it on to my son when he moved into his own place but after a few years he was done with it and returned it. It was in pretty bad shape and I didn’t need another nightstand so my initial thought was to donate it however I’m a sucker for a new project and decided to try something different with this piece and it just so happened that I was in need of a side table in my living room and this could be perfect.
I of course forgot to get a picture before I started sanding but here we are mid sanding.
Once I sanded as much as possible I used a stripper to get the paint out of all the crevices. Now, I did this because initially I was going to stain this but ultimately decided on painting so all the sanding and stripping was probably an unnecessary step since I ended up priming and then using a chalk paint.
I wanted to add a little something special and had seen a few furniture makeovers using wallpaper but I wanted a solid all over color so I used a paintable textured wallpaper on the sides and drawer fronts. Here we are all primed.
I then choose the prettiest chalk paint color (Lazy Linen) and used my handy sprayer to apply. You could apply this without a sprayer but I find the sprayer is so much faster and leaves a better finish. I then topped with a matte polyurethane to be sure it could hold up to the stresses of a much used side table.
I just love the finished product so much I want to find more retired pieces to bring a new life to.
Here are some of the products I used, I linked others above.
